Scar Removal Q & A

Be Well

What is a scar?

If you have a scar, it indicates permanent tissue damage. This change in your skin’s appearance shows that your body tried to heal after an injury by producing new connective tissue.

The appearance of your scar is determined by several factors, including:

  • Size of the trauma to your skin
  • Age of the damage, as fresh scars are generally pink or red initially and fade over time
  • Shape of your injury

Unlike normal skin, scar tissue doesn’t contain any hair follicles, sweat glands, or sebaceous glands.

How do scars form on the skin?

A scar is the last stage in the healing process. It occurs after three other phases in the skin’s healing process:

  • Inflammatory phase: body flushes out dead tissue and contaminants from the area
  • Proliferation phase: new tissue growth begins
  • Remodeling phase: your wound heals, and new tissue covers the area

Scars usually take six months to a year to fully form.

Are there different types of scars?

There are two primary types of scars: atrophic and hypertrophic:

Atrophic scars

An atrophic scar is a depression in your skin. This type of scar generally forms due to losing tissue as a result of surgery, trauma, or acne.

Hypertrophic scars

These scars are usually wide, raised, and bright pink when they first appear on the skin. Hypertrophic scars form due to excess collagen in the area working to repair skin damage.

How are scars treated?

Dr. Bowers offers aesthetic therapies like laser treatments, chemical peels, and dermal fillers to remove the appearance of scars.

Laser treatments

Laser treatments like ThreeForMe use precise pulses of light to target and break down scar tissue. Dr. Bowers then uses concentrated microbeams of energy to trigger collagen and elastin production in your skin to improve its texture and tone.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are a resurfacing technique that removes modest skin imperfections with a chemical solution. Dr. Bowers uses this aesthetic technique to treat mild or shallow scars while also leaving your skin with a refreshed appearance.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers like Juvéderm®‎ restore volume with plumping agents. While this approach is considered a temporary solution, dermal fillers can reduce scars for six to 12 months. If scars return following treatment, they’re usually smaller than they were before.
