Botox Q & A

Be Well

What is Botox?

The medical formula Botox comes from is a naturally occurring bacteria that produces a neurotoxin. When Dr. Bowers injects small amounts of Botox into your muscles, it immobilizes them, and they relax.

Botox is well-known for its ability to treat fine lines and wrinkles. When Dr. Bowers injects it into your facial muscles during anti-aging treatments, the muscles relax, resulting in a smoother complexion, primarily when used in combination with restylane® dermal fillers.

In addition to its ability to help improve your appearance aesthetically, Botox can also be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Muscles spasms
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)

Dr. Bowers uses Botox to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) as well. When injected into the skin, Botox can be used to block the nerves supplying the eccrine glands, which prevents sweat production.

Botox is also a valuable treatment for chronic migraines.

How does Botox treat migraines?

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for chronic migraines. You are considered to have chronic migraines if you have at least 15 headache days per month.

When used to relieve chronic migraines, Dr. Bowers injects Botox around the pain fibers associated with your headaches. As the substance enters these nerve roots, it blocks the pain signals involved in a migraine headache. This prevents pain networks from activating in your brain.

Botox treatments are used to prevent migraines before they start, and it generally takes two treatments spaced 12 weeks apart to determine how well Botox is working. The effects of a single migraine Botox treatment last 10-12 weeks, and having at least two appointments can cut your headache days in half.

What can I expect during my Botox treatment?

The length and results from your Botox treatment vary depending on your unique circumstances. During your consultation, Dr. Bowers reviews your condition and desired goals before outlining your Botox strategy and the number of treatments he recommends to achieve and maintain maximum results.

Anti-aging, aesthetic treatments to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles usually take a matter of minutes. Following your appointment, you can expect to see results within a week, and they typically last between three to six months.

Botox treatments for migraines or other health conditions might take 20 minutes or longer.

Regardless why you’re getting Botox treatment, Dr. Bowers generally delivers Botox injections using a small needle, so discomfort is minimal.

Same-day Botox treatments are available; call Be Well or schedule a consultation online today.
